GACN is always looking for committed interns and volunteers to help us run our programs!

Volunteering vs. Interning

Volunteers help us run programs and special events, whereas interns provide more general administrative support, such as fundraising, social media, creative services, and data management. Interns are required to commit more hours per week, and for a more extended period, than volunteers.

  • Commitment – We expect volunteers to work with us for a minimum of three months, and those who can commit for more extended periods will be given priority.
  • Skills & Interests – Volunteers with specific skills in areas such as event planning, fundraising, social media, copywriting, graphic design, web design and development, photography, and videography are encouraged to apply for creative services positions.

INTERNING

  • Length of Time – We require interns to stay for a minimum of three months, and priority will be given to those who can commit for more extended periods. Interns are required to work 20 to 25 hours a week, spread over three to four full days.
  • Opportunities– We offer internships in communication, marketing, public relations, photography/videography, public administration, donor relations, grants, and data analytics (including data engineering, infrastructure, user interface, and project management).

OPPORTUNITIES

Social Media & Communications Scope of Work:

  • Maintaining Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram channels
  • To include day-to-day implementation, helping with strategy and crafting posts along with other Communications Intern(s)
  • Writing blog posts and press releases
  • Writing weekly nonprofit bulletins gathered from industry newsletters
  • Writing and formatting monthly newsletter in MailChimp
  • Photographing distributions and programs for grant reporting, donor relations, etc. and writing thank you emails
  • Taking photos and interviewing beneficiaries of GACN’s work to be used on social media and other communications
  • Working on strategy and implementing fundraising campaigns
  • Other duties as assigned

Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Publicize and raise awareness about GACN volunteer opportunities on Facebook, Reliefweb, Idealist, LinkedIn, and more
  • Track volunteer needs and their time closely
  • Regularly check volunteer application forms for qualified candidates
  • Conduct necessary interviews for administrative volunteers

Supervising volunteers

  • Onboard and offboard all volunteers, ensuring that they complete the appropriate forms before their start date and following their end date
  • Enter contact information for all new interns and volunteers on GACN Personnel sheet
  • Serve as point of reference when volunteers have questions or concerns during their time at GACN

Public Relations Scope of Work:

  • Work on Public Relations strategy
  • Research people and publications (in various media) for potential interest in GACN and develop curated pitches
  • Create PR materials for journalists, including one-pagers
  • Create and maintain a database of media contacts
  • Maintain GACN’s Twitter and Facebook presence
  • Work on projects submitted by GACN’s partners (with Project Manager)
  • Other duties as assigned

Donor Relations Scope of Work:

  • Marketing operations support
  • Take ownership of donor inquiries, provide level 1 support, and elevate issues as necessary to provide timely and high-quality support for our donors
  • Promptly respond to all inquiries and provide a positive and grateful experience for all donor interactions
  • Keep donor interactions logged in HubSpot
  • Provide input and develop plans to improve the donor experience
  • Other duties as assigned

– Examples of the type of projects the intern would be responsible for:

  • Maintain and grow donor database
  • Gather past information about donors, including donation history and relationship history in an excel format
  • Import donor history in HubSpot
  • Build a plan to keep HubSpot fresh and usable for internal donor relations stakeholders

Grant Writing Scope of Work:

  • Identify potential funding opportunities to support existing and planned programs
  • Write proposals and coordinate applications for public and private funding
  • Develop written materials and presentations for various audiences to effectively communicate programs and activities by providing compelling, accurate writings reflective of the mission and program accomplishments
  • Organize data requests and grant deliverables; collect and analyze data for grants reporting; weekly internal funding reports/schedules/calendars, program reports, etc
  • Coordinate team meetings for grant-funded programs
  • Coordinate donor relations and requests for site visits and other activities
  • Coordinate with GACN partners for media events

Marketing Scope of Work:

  • Work on website expansion strategy
  • Develop new website pages and gather content
  • Manage Google Adwords Ad Grant
  • Assist in the coordination of fundraising campaigns
  • Work to improve our new and existing donor strategies, considering the opportunities with advertising, e-commerce, and mailings
  • Oversee or personally create advertising plans
  • Develop, create, execute, and optimize an integrated, customer-focused digital marketing strategy for SEO/SEM, paid search, display advertising, paid social campaigns, re-marketing, local search, email, and content marketing
  • Ensure proper tracking is in place to measure campaign performance, manage campaigns towards agreed-upon goals, and regularly report on the performance
  • Execute and optimize lead generation campaigns to bring in new donors, supporters, volunteers, and customers
  • Increase engagement with current donors
  • Manage key conversion points in the marketing funnel, including landing pages, website calls-to-action (CTAs), and lead-generating forms
  • Coordinate all aspects of GACN website: planning, design, development, user experience, content updates, search optimization, testing, and analytics
  • Day-to-day ownership of the website ensuring accurate information, up-to-date and engaging content, site performance tracking, compliance, UX, hosting issues and promotional content
  • Support email marketing programs, including email calendar, email design and development, landing pages, calls-to-action, Q&A, CRM platform management, testing, and reporting
  • Coordinate digital agency collaboration and alignment
  • Research and recommend new digital marketing tactics as appropriate
  • Coordinate closely with team members to strategize and execute web content, advertising campaigns, inbound, emails, and social media
  • Other duties as assigned

Grant Reporting Scope of Work:

  • Draft monthly grant reports for institutional donors
  • Coordinate with communications team regularly to ensure necessary photographs and materials are collected
  • Draft monthly update for GACN’s board members
  • Assist with the creation of internal reports
  • Perform any other related activities as assigned

Graphic Design Scope of Work:

  • Design original pieces, including illustrations and infographics, for print and web usage
  • Generate ideas to portray concepts, at times presenting concepts to clients (internal and/or external)
  • Develop UX – user personas & journeys, IA, wireframes, etc
  • Maintain brand consistency throughout all projects
  • Liaise with project teams to ensure deadlines are met
  • Stay up-to-date with industry developments and tools

Project Management Scope of Work:

  • Execute established production schedules and manage daily creative projects
  • Strive to understand the scope of the project to ensure all information and assets are provided
  • Manage project and service requests
  • Identify available resources and assign individual responsibilities to creative and production staff
  • Gain all necessary approvals to move projects forward
  • Keep the flow of information open, honest and transparent
  • Communicate critical information to relevant parties promptly
  • Manage and track all open projects in the pipeline
  • Helps to maintain brand voice for GACN and its partners
  • Manages content plans and segments ideas for use among different business lines to accent goals and drive positive results
  • Concepts and produces effective, multi-faceted content campaigns spanning all channels, including print, email, web, digital marketing, social media, blog posts, mobile and video
  • Generates content that fosters positive brand recognition for various target demographics across numerous channels
  • Audits content to ensure content is accurate, current, engaging, has a consistent appearance, is of the highest quality, and on-brand
  • Maintains a steady workflow for creating, editing, and publishing content
  • Collaborates with Design team to create compelling visual content
  • Maintain knowledge of and sensitivity to regional requirements, business processes, strategic direction, and legal compliance
  • See that brand standards are adhered to on all projects
  • Participates in brainstorms to deliver creative solutions for business partners
  • Interface with GACN partners
  • Help plan and execute GACN’s fundraising drives
  • Maintain photo and video collection on Google Drive
  • Create 1-2 videos and photos per week for social media, website, and other uses
  • Other duties as assigned

TIMELINE

We hire interns in 3-4 month sessions. Priority is given to interns who can stay for the entirety of a session, or longer. Spring intern positions are from January – April, summer positions are from May – August, and fall positions are from September – December.
